Earlier, the board approved the addition of a driver’s position for transporting handicapped students.
Also under transportation, the board agreed to base fuel costs at $1.80 per gallon for the $78,800 total for gasoline, oil and lubricants. , The last budget category, capital outlay, sparked another criticism of arts related programs from Eastham.
As proposed by the superintendent, the line item included $1,000 for fire extinguishes. $1,000 for special ed equipment. $4,125 for the elementary school's emergency lights and $3,290 for musical instruments.
“I’ll vote for the whole list if you substitute furniture for the teachers’ lounge for musical instruments." Eastham said. “Take those musical instruments and give them back to the store...1 want to trade a thing that's very questionable for a thing that’s desperately needed.”
The furniture wasn’t added but on a unanimous vote with Mrs. Reeve abstaining, the musical instruments were cut. In addition. $12,789 for computer printer and service was also deleted from capital outlay.
The cuts to expenditures in the superintendent’s proposed budget will result in a related decrease of $7,822 in federal funds on the revenue side of the ledger.
Closed Session
After an hour and a half executive session that preceded the budget review, the board unanimously approved per diem and ■ mileage payments to the new superintendent ot schools for the transition time he spends in the county prior to July 1 when he officially takes over the position. No amount was specified.
Also in a student discipline case carried over from a long closed meeting the week before, the board authorized the high school principal to assign a specific bus seat to the student involved.
