New Positions Opposed

"I think we ought to pay the existing personnel we have but I don’t think we ought to add more employees to the county's payroll." said Newbill Miller, in response to the proposed addition of a half-time speech therapist.

Assistant superintendent Rob McDaniel explained that the current speech therapist works with approximately 65 students and is limited in the amount of time she can spend with each individual. Hiring another half-time person will give more perpupil time and increase the chances that speech problems can be corrected or reduced in severity, accordine to McDaniel. He noted that the position will be paid for with federal, not local, funds. "She is currently working with the maximum number (of pupils) and then some.” he said, adding that most ot the children in the speech therapy program are in grades kindergarten through third.

The vote for the speech therapist position was 4-1 with Miller opposed.
