Skipper has added a new wag to an old dog’s tale. For Nancy and Kent Reeve’s collie-springer spaniel mix, it's not “Lassie, come home." It’s “Lassie, stay home!”
Like the canine heroine in Eric Knight’s classic. Skipper travels miles and miles and miles to be with his adored master. But his callused pads don’t come from crossing the breadth of Scotland and England. Skipper keeps his toe nails worn down by trotting along the side of Route 211 every morning on his trek from the Reeve family’s home in Gid Brown Hollow to the welfare office in Washington where Nancy works.
Neither sleet, snow, rain nor hail can stay Skipper from his eight-mile jaunt. He’s as dependable as the U. S. mail—almost. Ropes and chains don’t deter the canine Houdini. He can slip a collar faster than an escape-artist can wiggle out of leg irons and shackled trunk resting on a river bottom.
