White as Pantalone, father of Clairice. gave a comfortable and amusing performance employing good use of body language to make himself seem older. Halimah Holliday was a confident Beatrice and seemed to have a wonderful time on stage. While masquerading as a man, Beatrice has a swordfight with Silvio (Wynn Voeks) that was nicely orchestrated and well executed by Halimah and Wynn. Two smaller parts which deserve mention are that of Smereldina, a maid, played by Ophelia VonLudwig and Brighella, the innkeeper, played by Sara Haynes. Smereldina is cheeky and slighty bawdy, and Ophelia delivered her lines with ease and gleeful innuendo. The part of Brighella was quite small, but Sara Haynes stood out because of a certain maturity that she exuded and a good voice that carries without the strained pitch that most young actors need.
Sets designed under the direction of Nancy Lowry were appropriately conceived and very attractive. And, as in any play directed by Pamela Lynn, the costumes were worthy of a Cecil B. DeMille production. Lynn carefully researches, designs and constructs each costume herself. It was worth the price of ticket just to see her elegant handiwork.
John Jackson Concert
John Jackson returns to his native Rappahannock County for a concert at Mountain Magic Cinema. He’ll be joined on stage by son Jamie and brother Freddie Jackson of Sperryville.
