He maintained that approval of a 12.4 per cent hike for the principals would commit the board to 12.4 per cent for all employees. Eastham argued that endorsement of a straight 12.4 per cent increase for all employees will effectively wipe out the teachers' step raise for experience. a move that will anger county citizens. "Nobody around us is offering 12.5 per cent." Eastham insisted. "No county in the state that I'm aware of."
Despite his arguments, the board voted 4-1 to give 12.4 percent to all employees and to apply the same percentage increase to the teachers' extra dutv pay scale.
Despite Reeve's outspoken support for a guidance library aide and Massie's reminder that the visiting committee on school accreditation had pin-pointed the need for additional guidance-library staff, the proposed aide position was eliminated by a 3-1 vote with Reeve opposed and Massie abstaining.
The aide for special education, a position given a one-year waiver last year by the state, was likewise dropped.
The SI3.(XX) proposed for psychological services was reduced to $11,240. leaving the administration the option to either increase the psychologist’s time by a halfday or contract with the mental health center for emotionally disturbed counseling, not both as suggested by the superintendent. Eastham abstained on the vote. "I’m opposed to increasing the labeling of children through this woman’s work," he said, in reference to the school psychologist.
