Amissville just received. “We’re going to be lucky if we survive 12 months from now,” he said, suggesting that government funds go towards support of the companies themselves rather ' than to improve dispatching services.
Huff acknowledged that the shared service with Culpeper will give that county’s fire and rescue units and sheriffs department priority over Rappahannock. “Why should it always be the people of Rappahannock who have to sacrifice.” he asked.
Frank Zinn, co-chairman with Rosson of a special committee formed to study the dispatch question, read portions of the committee’s report to the Rappahannock supervisors. The report notes indiscriminant radio usage by volunteer personnel, lack of space in the dispatch center, outdated equipment and insufficient training of dispatchers. It calls for either relocation of the center or construction of a sound-proof work area, assistance from local government in both training dispatch personnel and provision of geographic aides and replacement of the radio owned by the Culpeper Fire Department with a county-owned console as short range objectives. For long range solutions, the report suggests implementation of a “911” emergency number for the area as well as combined dispatch services.
