An outbreak of rabies in animals in an area of seven mile radius west of Warrenton indicates that rabies is prevalent in the animal population east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, according to the Fauquier County Health Department.
Rabies is almost always a fatal infection in both animals and humans. Since the incubation period may be several months long, cats exposed to the infection during the month of May could come down with the disease in the fall or early winter months when cats are more frequently indoors.
