Smoot said he’d considered this route but had been told by Sheriff W. A. Buntin there was nothing that could be done about the noise under existing local laws.
Buntin explained that he'd checked with both the current and former commonwealth’s attorneys and had been told that without equipment to measure decibel levels, the county’s controls on noise couldn’t be enforced.
Supervisor H. B. Wood asked if the local ordinances included regulations on operating hours that applied to dances held at the community center.
Several years ago, time limits were set at 2 a.m. for the Flatwood and Pine Knot Inns, Buntin replied. “But I don’t know if they were ever formally put on the books.”
