We’re not against adding dual controls wherever practical. If it can be arranged to have two people conduct the monthly cafeteria inventory, that’s fine. But to insist that an unqualified audit is the least he will settle for, as Robert Eastham did at this week’s school board meeting, is ridiculous. We don’t care if it only costs $1,250. We don’t want to see a penny more than is necessary spent on auditing procedures as long as there's a limit on the number of students allowed to take ninth grade math, office practice, typing, eighth grade history or art.
Eastham’s charges are irresponsible. There is accountability of cafeteria funds and there are detailed records kept. Next . time, we hope he investigates first.
And if it’s not too much too ask, we also hope that Mr. Eastham will get his priorities straight. With school funds so drastically limited, we’d rather see him fighting for quality education rather than quality accounting.
