Waiving a proposal for an unqualified audit, Lane asked the supervisors if any of them understood how the student activity fund related to the school budget.

Eastham reminded Luke that when he’d voiced questions last week on the validity of the school board’s budget cuts, he’d been told by the supervisor chairman that the budget wouldn’t be acted on for a week, providing ample time for all concerns to be satisfied.

The vote to adopt the budget, coming immediately after executive session with no public discussion or explanation, “cut the rug right out from under me," Eastham said, his voice rising.

Day In Court

Luke noted that Eastham had spent two and a half hours at his house in the last week, accompanied by supervisor H. B. Wood and former school board member A. Y. Stokes, discussing the very same concerns and charges. “You had your day in court,’’ the chairman concluded.

“And you still deny to listen to the man!’’ interjected Lane.

Eastham said he has been trying since May 12 to get an explanation of the $29,427 “ghost cut”, the amount recovered by adjustments to fixed charges.
