ends while I was still in high school. United Press hired me away from there. Then NBC offered me a job in Washington as a writer, which is what I was when I started in broadcasting. I wrote news scripts for announcers to read, which is how it was done then.
Somehow-I don’t know how it happened-I started going on the air myself, with my own stuff, because I thought I could read it better than they could, and I could. Rappahannock News: What Was your motivation for getting into journalism? Was it ambition, idealism, talent, or something else? Brinkley: Mainly because I liked to write. The only thing I claimed to be any good at was writing, and if you have an ability to write, it (journalism) is a way to use it everyday. That appealed to me a lot and still does. I guess my motivation was to make use of whatever ability I had or thought I had, which is writing. Rappahannock News: Were you interested at that time in the prospects of fame and position?
