“Tht direct involvement of Jerry Baliles in this public demonstration of sour grapes is somewhat surprising,” Mr. Harrison said.
“I think it shows the Baliles campaign is quite concerned about the impact of our coming announcement of support by prominent Democrats and independents ... because of their convictions and not because of frustrated ambitions or animosities.”
Mr. Jones said he initiated formation of the group because he felt uncomfortable with Mr. Durrette.
“In talking to a lot of people, I found people throughout the state who felt the way I did,” he said.
Mr. Jones said the group hoped to conduct direct mailings and a phone bank operation but gave no estimate of their anticipated budget.
Their support does not extend to the other two Democratic candidates, state Sen. L. Douglas Wilder for lieutenant governor and Del. Mary Sue Terry for attorney general, Mr. Jones said.
“The ship of state and the course it is going to take is determined by one hand,” he said.
