Deer Problem
Farmers in some southwest Virginia counties have started requesting special hunting permits to protect their crops from white-tailed deer, an animal that was nearly nonexistent in much of the region 40 years ago.
John Baker, district wildlife biologist with the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries, said Tuesday that Bland, Grayson and Wythe county farmers have complained about crop losses the past few years.
“In the 1040s and 50s, white-tailed deer were nearly extinct in southwest Virginia,” Baker said by telephone. “Now we’ve gotten to the point where we don’t want to see the deer herd grow any larger in a few of these counties. We don’t want to raise deer on farms.”
Although deer cause millions of dollars of damage in Virginia each year, much of it has happened east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, said Jack Ravbourne, commission chief of the division of game.
