The processing market gets the apples that are poorer quality for making apple juice, sliced apples and other products. “The processors usually don’t even pay enough to meet the cost of production for most growers,” Snead said. “You have to try to do better with the apples you have and raise a higher quality to sell on the fresh market.” Snead attributes the higher quality of this year’s crop to the dry early spring and the good rains through May. “During the early spring, the apples are more susceptible to diseases, and this year was dry so there are no fungus diseases,” Snead said. “If we have good rains between now and harvest, we should be okay.” He said that the prices will depend on how the market is during the fall. “In past years the processing market has been terrible, but the fresh market has been good for quality fruit,” Snead said. “People are willing to pay for quality.” Washington, Va.j 25 acres, 1 mile west of Town, fronting Route 211, south slope with good views.
