The Virginia Division of Forestry announced recently the results of a comprehensive aerial survey to determine the boundaries of visible defoliation by the gypsy moth in the forests of northern Virginia. The survey indicated that six Northern Virginia counties suffered defoliation totaling 5,200 acres; in Arlington, 50 acres were denuded by the gypsy moth. Clarke County led the northern group with 2,554 acres defoliated; Loudoun was next with 1,860 acres. Stripped trees were noted for the first time in Fauquier County, 360 acres; Frederick, 229 acres; Warren, 174 acres; and Page with 25 acres. This aerial survey indicated a marked increase over last year's total of only 400 acres.

Defoliation by the gypsy moth in Virginia is following an expected traditional pattern. In the first five years or so as the pest begins to invade virgin territory, the defoliation increases by 10 times for each successive year gypsy moth is active in the area. Within the defoliated area, few oaks were expected to die following the first year of attack. A second or third consecutive year of defoliation can result in a 20-, 30% mortality.
