The vice chairman of the group is Bernice Lichtenstein of Richmond, a veteran of the party’s political wars going back to the presidential efforts of Robert Taft and Thomas E. Dewey. Serving as secretary will be Douglas G. Chapman of Urbanna, another long-time Republican activist. The treasurer is Inez Q. Bancroft, founder of the Young Republicans in 19.r>9, a Goldwater campaigner, and one time administrative aide to C.S. Sen. William L. Scott.
The 19-member steering committee includes representatives from all 10 congressional districts, although the heaviest representation comes from the 3rd.
According to Jones, the organization will be more than a mere list of names. He said the group will sponsor a speakers bureau, use direct mail in support of Baliles, set up phone banks and actively campaign for the Democratic candidate.
The formation of such a Republican group is unprecedented in Virginia politics.
