man Judy Peachee, state Sen. Robert E. Russell and state party treasurer William Hurd, and those led by Jones.
Russell defeated Jones for the state Senate nomination in 1988. When Jones was then nominated for the House of Delegates seat which he had vacated to run for the Senate, Russell and Peachee actively campaigned for Jones’ Democratic opponent, N. Leslie Saunders Jr. Saunders won, and local Republicans angrily split into two warring camps.
Comes now the 1985 gubernatorial race. Durrette was sup• ported for the nomination by Peachee, Russell and most of the Richmond area party conservatives, while many of the old line Republicans, such as Jones, favored Parris. Indeed, Durrette is regarded as something of a protege of Peachee, as is Russell.
Her critics within the party charge that Peachee is primarily interested in the acquisition of power, first within the party itself and then, through the election of Durrette as governor, within state government. At a later time, they contend, this power would be extended by the election of Russell to statewide office.
