Former Washington Mayor Dorothy Davis wants to subdivide her land, currently zoned for agricultural and conservation purposes, into a seven-lot subdivision.

On January 15 the Rappahannock County Planning Commission recommended that she apply ta the Board of Supervisors for a rezoning of the property, since a division of five or more lots that includes lots of under 25 acres must be zoned Residential Subdivision 1 (RS-1). The 158.5-acre site is on a hill off Route 211 overlooking the town of Washington.

Mrs. Davis had originally applied to the Planning Commission for an exception to subdivide her property, based on a mistaken recommendation by county authorities.

At the Coinmission meeting, Mrs. Davis said that she was principally concerned with approval for subdivision of two lots on which she already has contracts. Mrs. Davis said she also wants to subdivide at a later date an adjoining 52-acre tract, which includes the house in which she is presently living.

Two more lots also have been sold to Dean and Linda Morehouse, who are already occupying the premises.

Mrs. Davis previously had been told by local authorities that an “exception to subdivide”, which would not require a rezoning of the land, would be the only requirement necessary for her to subdivide the property. The Planning Commission has the authority to grant exceptions to subdivide. During the meeting, however, it became apparent that Mrs. Davis needed to apply for a rezoning of the land because two of the proposed lots are under 25 acres.
