The Dennis Store in Scrabble is an old-fashioned place — the kind of store that brings back memories of childhood.
Robert G. Dennis, Sr., has been managing the business in Scrabble for the past 30 years. He is helped by his wife Doris who keeps the books and minds the store in the afternoon. The building was built by Robert’s father about 60 years ago and the Dennises have maintained the old country tradition of keeping a supply of many provisions on hand.
An old Quaker pot-bellied oil heater keeps the old-fashioned store warm in the winter. “We used to have a wood heater but this one goes all night,” says Robert.
In front of the big stove sits i cozy chair suggesting that this is tl e kind of place where you sit down, take off your hat, and chat awhile. He gets a lot of regular customers like Roy Knighting who comes in nearly every day to do just that. When asked if famous people ever pay a visit, Robert just smiled and said, “All my customers are famous.”
