The store does have a few concessions to modem times such as a microwave oven where hungry visitors can heat up their sandwiches. Mr. Dennis also maintains a couple of Whiting Oil gas pumps to fill his customer’s horseless carriages.
When folks are ready to pay Robert, he opens the antique cash register where the numbers pop up and the change is counted on a white marble slab.
Signs of times past are abundant in the old place like “Boy! I can breathe now! — Vicks Nose and Throat Drops”. There are also a couple of advertising signs featuring Dr. Pepper with a thermometer and Royal Crown Cola painted on a mirror (“Best by Taste Test”).
The store is a homey place — the old wood floors creak and the ceiling is tongue and groove pine. This is not the store to find whole-grain bread or gourmet jellies — here you’ll find White House jam and Schmidt’s Blue Ribbon Quality bread that’s as white as a snowflake.
Even the hours are a little oldfashioned. “During the winter I get here about 6:30 in the morning and close about 7 or 7:30.” Mr. Dennis isn’t too concerned about exact times. “I stay here,” laughs Robert, “depending on whether anybody is$ spending money.”
