For her prepared speech, Dose chose to speak on “The Right to Die.” She noted that she began her research with children’s rights but as she continued her preparations she felt compelled to speak on the right to die. For her extemporaneous speech, Dose was required to discuss “How a Bill Becomes Law.”
Two other Wakefield students were runners-up in the contest. Senior Sean Dolan of Warrenton spoke on “The Rights of Citizens” and Junior David Norris of Haymarket spoke on “Citizen Participation in the Legislative Process.”
The American Legion gives cash prizes at the district level of the contest and then grants scholarships to the winners at the state and national levels.
