The Architectural Review Board (ARB) was presented with four applications at its regular monthly meeting on January 16 and approved each of them.
The ARB reviews plans for all new buildings and changes to existing structures for which a building permit is required. Any changes must maintain the historical integrity of the town in accordance with the provisions of the historic district ordinance passed last summer.
Exterior style, color, and building materials are compared by the ARB with buildings which were built in the town during two time periods.
Donna Fisher presented members with plans for a new sign at the Washington Antiques Center. Members Carol Miller, Jim Thomasson, and Evelyn Willis agreed that the sign should be permitted.

his desire that another proposed sign, a directory of other businesses in the building, would be “in continuity with this” sign. Mrs. Fisher assured ARB members that it would.
Wendy Weinberg, owner of the Gay Street Theatre building, presented plans to modify the existing structure. Modifications will include a gable roof over the projection room and a stucco front with ornamental shutters.
Mrs. Weinberg stated at the meeting that she wants, but has not made definite plans, to place white painted stucco over the building’s cinderblock and asked the ARB for approval to do so.
“I’m sure it would be an improvement,” replied Mrs. Miller.
Mrs. Weinberg also asked the ARB to approve either straight or domed shutters. She hopes to be able to use domed shutters but wanted approval for the other type should she not be able to get the domed variety.
Members of the ARB gave a unanimous approval for the renovations as presented.
Members of the ARB then reviewed a submission by attorneys Peter and Sharon Luke for a new sign to be placed on their law offices. It included a snapshot of the sign which is made of solid cast brass to be mounted flat against the building.
