Wakefield School
basketball update

The Wakefield School varsity basketball team suffered a disappointing week as its four-game winning streak came to an end with losses to Tara Reston and St. Anne’s Bellfield. With one win at the end of the week against Heritage Academy, Wakefield finished the week with a 5-4 overall record and 2-1 record in the Delaney Conference.
The Wakefield Owls traveled to Tara Reston for their third conference game this season. Despite a slow start for the Wakefield team, the Owls overcame a first quarter deficit of 10 points to tie the game at the end of the half.
In the second half, Wakefield was discouraged by several calls which included four technical fouls. Thus, after gaining an early second half lead, Wakefield lost the momentum from their surge which resulted in their first conference loss of the season. The final score was 56-48.
The Owls then traveled to Charlottesville to play a strong St. Anne’s Bellfield team. The game began as a defensive struggle as David Rowzie of Amissville scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the first half to keep Wakefield within reach of a win.
In the third quarter, Wakefield rallied behind Rowzie and Eddie Ferguson of Huntly to tie the game at 27-all.
However, the St. Anne’s team put together a strong fourth quarter surge which left the Owls with a 4435 loss.
Finally, Wakefield hosted the team from Heritage Academy whom they had beaten earlier in the season. Once again, Wakefield started slowly and the Owls found themselves behind by as much as eight points in the first quarter.
Throughout the third period, the lead switched hands several times as both teams employed a straight defense. But in the fourth quarter Wakefield took the lead for good and finished the game with a 48-44 victory. /
Rowzie /led all scorers with 22 points and Nick Longerbeam of Ber- * ryville added 10 points and nine rebounds in the Owls’ fifth victory of the season.
