I There should be a story in this week’s paper about the -meeting of the Town of Washington’s Planning Commission Monday afternoon. The commission was to discuss the proposed amendments to the Historic District Ordinance, and make recommendations to the Town Council for .consideration. *■ There’s no story, or rather the story is that only three - members showed up. Since four members are needed fora “.quorum, the meeting was cancelled, again.
That’s been the story for a year now. The commission ;used to have five members. It seemed impossible, after a ‘’.'number of attempts, to gather a quorum so TowrfCouncil . expanded it to seven members, hoping to get at least four at "each meeting. " So far, no good. „ Monday’s meeting date and time, we understand, met • with the approval of all members of the commission. We don’t ''know why the other members didn’t show, and it’s not really “important.
What is important is that the Planning Commission has 'important business to conduct, and matters which need ^consideration. The members of the commission need to make some decisions. If they are unwilling or unable to carry out • their duties, which include attending scheduled meetings, •‘they should resign from the commission. If they wish to serve, they should attend meetings or notify someone of their •absence in advance. Other than a sudden emergency, that’s , , ''just common courtesy. " v It’s a waste of everyone’s time to schedule meetings, ™ : )iave a few members show up, and then wait for an hour ^’wondering if anyone else will show. ; The present situation needs to be changed. It’s intolerable and unfair to all involved.
