Charlie Compton, who

served patrons of Rural Route 1, Amissville, for 31 rears, has retired. Seldom did rain, snow, sleet, etc. ever deter the dedicated “mailman” from rus journey. He has covered the most extensive route in the state, some 85 miles serving almost 400 households, for this length of time.

Country comes to town, you might say. Mrs. Charlie Jenkins happened to look out the door of her home on Gay Street in Washington Sunday afternoon and to her surprise there was a blacV bear. The animal ran off in ai easterly direction and it wai later reported that somethin! had frightened the horses on the Davis property on Route 211 east. By the time the distur bance could be investigated th< creature had vanished.
