packed the chemicals and the kids into a van and drove to George Mason University in Fairfax where Dr. Douglas Mose was to press the mixture into tablets. But the doctor was out and so the experiment went on the back Bunsen burner until this Tuesday when Richard Trebino returned to classes at George Mason and returned the chemicals to Dr. Mose.
Twenty thousand pounds of pressure per square inch later, four little disks, measuring about 1/2 inch across and 1/4 inch thick, came back on Friday morning to the RCHS shop’s kiln where they were baked, again at 1,650 degrees, until 2 a.m Saturday.
Then came the final crucial step.
The fragile pellets had to be cooled at the rate of 100 degrees an hour for five to six hours, fed constantly with a light breeze of oxygen during the cooling process.
At 8:30 a.m. it was time for the test.
In a special container (provided by Ray Cannon) with liquid nitrogen (donated by Edward Armentrout), the pellets were cooled to minus 320 degrees.
