The lot at. the corner of Calvert Street and Main has been a stage where the town of Washington’s history played.
It was the site of the Free Town Meeting House in the early 1800s. It was the new county of Rappahannock’s first courthouse in 1833 and 18-34, rented for the princely sum of $25 per year.
The old frame building became a doctor’s office and Mr. Shyrock’s store before it was torn down in 1904 to make way for William Stuart’s General Merchandise Store and Stuart’s Bank, the last private bank in the United States.
Then in 1946, the lot was bought by C. FT Giles and the business was rechristened the Washington Cash Store, operated first by the senior Giles and since 1973 by his son, C. E. (Skippy) Giles Jr.
Now, the Washington (Town Council ia proposing to rezone the west* side of Main Street from Calvert Street to Middle Street, clearing the way for Mr. Giles to turn the Cash Store into Offices for the county Health Department downstairs and three apartments upstairs.
