This time the occasion is a happy one; a glasnost of ordinary people as opposed to the media circus which dominated the Washington summit in December.
Most of the Russian visitors have probably seen America
though the eyes Wlheir government, and through the cameras of the news correspondents covering the recent summit. During their visit, they will have a first-hand opportunity to gather impressions of America, and to tell their family and friends when they return to Russia.
It seems appropriate that, in this attempt to bring understanding to the ordinary people of two vastly different cultures, that Rappahannock County is a part of the effort.
Through their own eyes, and through their experiences here, the Soviet visitors will be seeing a slice of the real America — a community which takes great pride in its heritage, and which cares deeply about its neighbors.
