“I’d like to get an answer as soon as I can,” said Mr. Giles, adding that the Health Department’s lease on its current office space in the Clopton House expires in June. “If you could give it to me tonight, that would be great,” he said, explaining that the store’s inventory would have to be sold before remodeling could begin.
He noted that a precedent exists for use of the building as offices, since the Cash Store maintained its own office downstairs until 14 , years ago and still uses the upstairs for that purpose today.
Eugene Full, the Health Department’s regional administrative manager, said his agency has “negotiated some” with Mr. Giles but that terms of a lease can’t be finalized without an estimate on remodeling costs. “But we are prepared to go forward.” The department’s Clopton House offices, with just 1,170 square feet, are “totally inadequate . . . That’s the reason we’re looking to relocate,” he said, reporting that the downstairs of the Cash Store measures 1,800 square feet.
