Literacy volunteers to meet
The Rappahannock Literacy Volunteers will meet Friday, Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Trinity Parish Hall in Washington. A cordial welcome is extended to all who would like to attend.
Exhibit at Middle St.
The public is invited to an exhibit of new paintings, photographs and sculptures by Joel Hoyer which will open Sunday, Sept. 11 at Middle Street Gallery in Washington. The reception for the artist will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Mr. Hoyer will also be giving a talk about his work Friday, Sept. 16 at the Gallery at 8 p.m., which is free and open to the public. The show is titled “From a Hiding Place” and will be on display through September. Middle Street Gallery is a non-profit, tax-exempt artists’ cooperative! The hours are Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment. Call 675-3440.

The movie Suspect will be playing at the Gay Street Theater on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10 and ll at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Cher (“Moonstruck”) gives another rave performance in this gripping, new suspense thriller. She stars as a tough public defender assigned to represent a deaf-mute Vietnam veteran accused of murder. Dennis Quaid co-stars as an opportunistic D.C. lobbyist serving on the jury. At first he seems disinterested, but when he discovers evidence that could clear Cher’s client, he takes on her cause. Cher and Quaid break all the rules of the legal profession and put their own lives in jeopardy to expose the vicious killer. The movie is rated R. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.
Circus in Flint Hill
Roberts Bros. Circus will visit Flint Hill on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The circus will offer two performances at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at the Flint Hill Fire Department’s carnival grounds. Sponsored by the fire department, the circus features clowns, educated ponies, elephants and excitement for kids of all ages. Advance tickets are available at Settle’s Grocery, Flint Hill Store, Hillsdale Grocery, B & B Servicenter and from members of the Flint Hill VFD.
Reunion time again
The annual reunion of the late Henry T. Wharton and Lillie M. Cloud will be held Sat., Sept. 10. Family and friends are invited to come bring a picnic basket and join right in. The reunion will be held at the Rappahannock Park as usual. “Come everyone and eiyoy,” said a family spokesperson.
