“It’s obvious that the current system has left the county with a mess,” Hampton District Supervisor Mike Massie said. “We were eager to look at the new system which the Updikes propose, rather than stay with the old method. ”
The Updikes also offered, Mr. McCarthy said, backup equipment if one of the primary pieces should break down. In a situation where state regulations require that the trash be covered each day, it is vital that the loader not be out of service for repairs for a week or two, he said.
Mr. Massie added that the first bid from Community Trash was $50,000 higher and did not include the compactor. “Through negotiating, we saved $50,000 and got the compactor which will prolong the life of the landfill — which also saves tax dollars.”
At its meeting on Sept. 6, the full board affirmed its decision to award the trash contract to Community Trash Removal.
Waste could light U. S.
Experts estimate, according to the Virginia Division of Litter Control, that 250 million tons of solid waste is thrown away each year in the United States. One ton of solid waste, experts report, equals onequarter of a ton of coal or one barrel of oil. If all solid waste were converted to energy, they add, the amount created would supply the residential and commercial lighting needs of the nation.
