three pickups per week, but again Mr. McCarthy noted that there was no provision for a compactor. There was also no provision for backup equipment in the event of a breakdown, he said, and the company, although experienced in trash collection, does not have any recent experience with landfill operations.
The company also bid $3,000 for initial cleanup of the dumpster sites, plus an additional charge for extra pickups. Assuming that the present experience of Community Trash holds, he said, there will need to be pickups five times per week.
The three board members present at the meeting Aug. 26 also stressed the importance of the landfill compactor, a self-propelled machine which packs the trash into the cells before it is covered each day. A denser pack of trash, Mr. McCarthy explained, means less moisture will seep through it, producing less leachate at the bottom of the cell. That, in turn, means less liquid which potentially may leak through the liners.
Also, Supervisor C. K. (Pete) Estes pointed out, up to 25 percent more trash can be disposed of in a given area when a compactor is used. “At the cost of excavating and liners, you’re talking about a substantial savings.”
Community Trash also proposes a new method of collection at the dumpster sites, replacing the six cubic yard “green boxes” now in use with a 95-cubic-yard bin at each site.
