After removing the boxes and cleaning up the sites, they will be regraded and a ramp built so that residents can drive up to the bins and throw the trash down into them — rather than up and in, or on the ground — as is now the case. “We hope to make the chore of dumping trash a little easier for local residents,” Mr. McCarthy said.
The trash will be collected with a truck equipped with a clamshell loader, which will pick the trash out of the bin and load it into another, smaller bin on the truck. That, Mr. McCarthy said, will allow the loader operator to see what is being taken out.
Once at the landfill site, the county administrator said, the trash can be separated from the white goods and recyclable materials. Also, any suspect items can be put aside for closer inspection rather than dumped with the rest, as is the case when a compactor truck is used.
