However, in the last few months, with junked refrigerators and other garbage piling up on the ground, even that was discontinued because of the impossibility of telling new litter from old and determining who had dumped what, Sheriff Woodward explained.
Already, the sheriffs department is one deputy short of being able to provide around-the-clock coverage, and rather than leave the county without the law’s presence at night, when most serious violations are committed, the day shift is without a road deputy, the sheriff said, adding that he and investigator Ed Streepy fill in then as needed.
The manpower shortage will be exacerbated, he said, as soon as hunting season opens, when one deputy will be assigned full-time to enforcement of hunting laws, a practice begun last year.. Those factors, coupled with continually having “more complaints to answer, more papers to serve” means there’s no deputy to spare for trash work.
