however, that shows most clearly the optimism of Virginia businesses, according to Mr. Pearson. Permits jumped statewide 13.2 percent in July, with the cumulative JanuaryJuly surge at 11.4 percent. Pearson predicts that future construction rates will slow, as indicated by the 5.3 percent drop in sales of single family homes in July.
“More generally,” said Mr. Pearson, “the June and July 1988 results are further strong evidence that the consumer boom of 1982-1987 in Virginia has ended, replaced by more moderate and sustainable rates of consumer demand growth.”
Grants combat litter
According to the Virginia Division of Litter Control, 94 percent of Virginia’s cities and counties apply for and receive grant monies each year to help combat the litter problem in the Commonwealth.
