Scan, which imports Danish furniture, eventually expanded to 14 stores in the Washington metropolitan area, Baltimore, Newport News, Norfolk and Chicago. Mr. Gowell retired as its president in 1984.
Mr. Gowell, a pacifist, was a conscientious objector during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, the former Sylvia Weiss, Boston; a son, Walter R. Gowell, McMinnville, Ore.; two daughters, Kathryn G. Harward, Belington, W.Va. and Ruth G. Gowell, Falls Church; a brother, Arthur L. Gowell, Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Jean Wickes, Philadelphia; and 18 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Fairfax Unitarian Church, Oakton, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 18.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Fund.
