seems to be concentrated around the geographical “edges” of the state, Pearson observed. Most of the decreases occurred in Northern Virginia from Alexandria to the Rappahannock; Hampton Roads, from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach; the Eastern Shore and in the far west in the Bristol area. Conversely, Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Danville and the Shenandoah Valley experienced increases in retail sales.
Three indicators posting gains were non-agricultural employment, electricity consumption and building permits. A 3.9 percent increase in payroll jobs for June (the latest figures available) shows that both old and new firms in the state are continuing to expand their capacity, said Mr. Pearson. Likewise, growth in electricity consumption “indicates more utilization of our facilities, both commercial and residential.”
