Mrs. Stamer said that she already has contacted a company which will supply a trailer and barrels for the day, and haul the materials away in the evening. “We may even keep the Community Recycling Day concept going after the landfill opens, to get people used to the idea, and to make it easier.’’
Once the landfill opens, however, the recycling center will be open to the public during the landfill’s regular hours of operation.
Mrs. Stamer said that papers, glass and aluminum will be accepted both during the recycling day activity at the Rec Center and at the landfill site. Newspapers must be bundled, and should not include any glossy paper such as magazines or catalogs. Glass should be rinsed, separated into clear, brown and amber, and the caps removed. Aluminum cans will take up less space if they are crushed.
Although the opening of the recycling center is, of course, dependent upon the opening of the landfill, Mrs. Stamer said that RALLY plans to move ahead and get a contract and the operation of the recycling operation firmed up prior to its opening. Two firms, Southern Scrap of Winchester, and Piedmont Recycling of Culpeper, have expressed interest in serving the center.
Mrs. Stamer said that RALLY plans a major public education campaign to make residents aware of the benefits of recycling. She will contact the schools and make herself available to speak on recycling.
