increases 6.8%

Superintendent David Gangel submitted a $4,517,345 budget for the next year to the School Board Tuesday night. This is a $289,043 or 6.84 percent increase over the current school budget.
The budget, as presented asks for an increase ol $308,069 in county funds, more than the total increase in the budget, because funds from all other sources are projected to be down $19,026 from this year.
In presenting his budget to the board members Dr. Gangel stressed that income figures are not yet certain because the General Assembly has not completed work on the state’s budget. However, he said he does not expect any large differences between the figures he presented and the figures that eventually come from Richmond.
The budget estimates that funds from the state will decrease $113,451 compared to this year. Federal funds are projected to decrease $4,538. Other funds, chiefly monies from the state sales tax that are returned to the localities based on school-age population, are projected to increase $98,964.
Approximately $238,000 of the increase in the budget is for salaries. Dr. Gangel said he gave the highest priority in the budget to funding a six percent across-theboard salary increase. “We have to continually strive to improve,” he said. “You have to improve one person at a time, and if morale suffers, it is difficult to make that happen.”
In addition to the six percent raise, the new budget again compresses the teachers’ salary schedule at the beginning, accelerates the step increases at the top levels of the scale, asks for an increase in the supplement for teachers with masters degrees from $1,330 to $1,500, restores the position of library aide at the elementary school to a full-time position, increases suplements for exSee
