port were a lack of enough planning time, the need for more timely evaluation of the staff, and a need for more evaluation of parts of the curriculum. Although they noted that housekeeping had improved they were still concerned, particularly with the cleanliness of the students’ bathrooms. The study also notes that the school needs a school nurse and more space.
The Self Study noted that the school has a capacity for 661 students and an enrollment of 580. “Our school plant was designed to accomodate more students than are enrolled,” the study says. “It was not designed to provide the number of individual teaching, service, and office areas which are required to implement current curricula programs.
“Many changes have taken place in the educational program . . . which have resulted in a tremendous demand for additional space and have, in effect, reduced the functional capacity of the building.”
The addition of kindergarten classes, special education classes and remedial education classes are among the programs the study cites which have created the need for more space. Some areas that were intended for storage have been converted for office or instructional space, creating a need for more storage space. Some classrooms have been divided, making classrooms, particularly for special education, which the teachers find too small.
The visiting committee will use the school’s Self Study and the members own observations to prepare its report on the strengths and weaknesses at the elementary school.
