Mr. Shepherd stressed that the bacteria is not the same as fecal coloform, which is considered evidence that a water source has been contaminated by sewerage. Simple coloform bacteria, he explained, exists in the intestinal tract of every warmblooded mammal, and is essential to the digestive process.
However, he said, its presence in a water source indicates that groundwater is filtering into the spring from the watershed above the spring. “We know of no drainfield, feedlot or other usual source of contamination” above the spring, he said.
