“We didn’t want him to hit any of those fences. We were really just kind of schooling more than anything. We weren’t expecting to win,” she said.
The Rogers wanted to make sure that Imperial Mom didn’t knock against the timber. “He’s a horse that tends to be a little careless with his jumping, though he’s quite brilliant. As a result, sometimes he hits them with his back legs,” she explained.
Michele Rouse’s The Printer was not so fortunate in the ladies timber race. After taking the lead at the drop of the flag, The Printer set a fast pace which she was pressed to keep by Crab Apple and Dawn Dugan.
It looked a repeat of The Printer’s Casanova win anyway, but the good mare hit the last fence, tearing her leg and unable to spit and fight to the finish. It was Crab Apple’s race by two and a half lengths.
