census takers to update address lists and census maps. Initial addresslisting in rural areas was conducted last summer.

And, prompt return of the completed questionnaire saves money. The Census Bureau has conservatively budgeted for a 70 percent mail response rate, but every one percent of households returning questionnaires above that rate will save taxpayers $10 million.

The savings will come from avoided wages and expenses for additional census workers needed to make follow-up visits. The mail response rate in 1980 was over 80 percent.
