Music critics have given high praise to their performances across the country and around the world, said a RAAC spokesperson.

California has been described as “instrumental fireworks, driving bluegrass at its finest, instrumental excellence, jaw-dropping amazing, most delightfully buoyant, technically accomplished music, in a class by themselves, vocals first rate, production values excellent, these guys bum it down, instrumental peerless work, boggling, it doesn’t get much crisper, stunning performers,” the spokerperson added.

California is Byron Berline, three-time national champion, one of the most sought-after session fiddlers, whose professional career reads like a who is in the music business.

Dan Crary, a premier traditional guitarist, recognized nationally and internationally as one of the founders of the “flatpicking” style of lead guitar work.

John Hickman is legendary as one of the great masters of the banjo whose personal appearances have taken him on tours throughout the U.S. and 15 countries abroad. Steve Spurgin is a hit song writer, vocalist and bass player, whose singing is warm, polished, genuine and professional. John Moore adds expert mandolin, guitar and vocals and has a growing reputation as one of the hot new talents to emerge from southern California.

But the whole of California is so much greater that the sum of these performing partners.

Individually these artists are masters of their chosen instruments. Collectively, they are ambassadors of a traditional music form throughout this country and around the world. Their music begins with the roots of country and bluegrass and expands on these traditions to create an original and dynamic sound.

In 1975 Berline formed a new band after the break up of Country Gazaette. Berline and Sundance in
