To the Editor:
In the two years that I have lived in Virginia, I have been blessed by the opportunity to send one of my children to the Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly. In terms of academic excellence, friendly, family-like social atmosphere, athletic programs, and personal enrichment Wakefield Country Day School is a parent’s dream-eome-true. G.K. Chesterton once remarked that 50 percent of education is the atmosphere. If the academic atmosphere is proper, dignified, and serious, learning occurs naturally. At Wakefield the learning atmosphere is enhanced by a required dress code, by the prevalence of civility and decorum, and by an attitude of respect and obedience to teachers and supe/riors. At Wakefield teachers do not dilute or “dumb down” the subject matter. Students are required to learn the subject in its integrity, to work conscientiously, and to practice the essential academic habits of self-discipline, giving a total effort, and constant application.
The great thing about this school is its concentration on the basics, the fundamental, essential tools of learning. Here a student will learn Latin and grammar, composition and vocabulary, modem languages and history, science and mathematics. Although Wakefield instills in its students the essential categories and first principles of learning, it does not ignore the creative, imaginative side of education. Creative writing, skits and plays, medieval feasts and Christmas celebrations that are reminiscent of “merry old England” cheer and warm the heart. The excellence at Wakefield consists in the wonderful balance of work and play, discipline and imagination, the stability of a family and the excitement of trips and travel opportunities.
