20.4 percent during school, 24.1 percent after school, 26.9 percent on week nights and 37 percent on weekends. Ninth graders were almost as likely to smoke on weekends; 36 percent reported they had done so. However, 8.3 percent smoke before school, 6.9 percent during school, 19.4 percent after school, 18.9 percent smoke on week nights.

Among drugs that are illegal for everyone, marijuana was the most used by Rappahannock students. Ten percent report using marijuana. 28.3 percent of the seniors report smoking marijuana, 15.1 percent of juniors, 13.6 percent of tenth graders, 13.9 percent of ninth graders, 1.6 percent of eighth graders, 3.7 percent of seventh graders, and 1.8 percent of sixth graders.

Among seniors, 17 percent reported smoking marijuana between one and six times a year, 3.8 percent between once and twice a month, and 7.5 percent between one and seven times a week. Sixteen percent of the seniors reported feeling “no high” or “little high” when they smoked marijuana. 14.8 percent reported getting “very high” or “stoned.”

Students were asked about their use of a variety of other drugs. Two percent reported using cocaine. 4.8 percent used “uppers.” Three percent used “downers.” 4.8 percent report using inhalants. Five percent use hallucinogens, and 7.3 percent report using other drugs. Students report most of this drug use also takes place on weekends.

In all cases the senior class accounted for a major portion of the drug users. Nine percent of the seniors reported using cocaine, 13 percent used “uppers,” 9.3 percent used “downers,” 9.3 percent use inhalants, 16.7 percent use hallucinogens, and 19.2 percent use other drugs.

The survey was financed through a drug free schools grant. The grant also paid to train leaders who have formed Concerned Citizens Working for Healthy Youth. This group is trying to combat drug and alcohol use among Rappahannock students.
