ends. None checked before or during school. Almost four percent said after school, 7.4 percent reported drinking them on week nights, and 59.3 percent reported drinking wine coolers on weekends.
This is not an every weekend occurence for most, however. Twenty four percent of the seniors reported drinking beer between one and six times a year, another 18.5 percent reported drinking beer between one and two times a month, and another 22.2 percent reported drinking beer between one and seven times a week, but 7.4 percent said they drink beer every day.
There were no questions asking students how many drinks they have when they drink. However they were asked about the “effects” of drinking. Forty four percent of the seniors reported feeling “no high” or “little high” from drinking beer. However, 22.3 percent reported getting “very high” or “bombed." Wine coolers were less likely to result in student drinkers feeling high, but 37.8 percent reported feeling “very high” or “bombed” after drinking liquor.
Students were also asked where they drink. Again they could check more than one location. Among last year’s seniors drinking beer 25.0 percent drink at home, 7.4 percent drink at school, 20.4 percent said they drink in cars, 40.7 percent drink at friends’ homes, and 42.6 percent drink in other locations.
Cigarettes were used by 32.7 percent of students in sixth through 12th grades. Older students were more likely to report using cigarettes. Fifty three percent of the seniors report smoking, 28.3 percent of the juniors, 44.1 percent of 10th graders, 40.3 percent of ninth graders, 27.3 percent of eighth graders, 24.4 percent of seventh graders, and 14 percent of sixth graders.
The younger students who smoke do^so mostly on weekends. A significant number of older students report smoking daily and throughout the day. Twenty four percent of seniors report smoking before school,
