Alcohol is used by more Rappahannock students than any other drug according to a survey of students in sixth through 12th grades.

According to the survey using a questionaire developed by Pride Inc of Atlanta, 47.3 percent of the students drink beer, 44.9 percent drink wine coolers and 34.6 percent drink liquor.

In general use was higher for older students. Sixty four percent of the seniors and 65.4 percent of the juniors drink beer. Fifty five percent of the seniors and 56.6 percent of the juniors drink wine coolers and 61.1 percent of the seniors and 62.8 percent of the juniors drink liquor.

Last year’s ninth graders were almost as likely to drink. Sixty eight percent drink beer, 52.5 percent drink wine coolers and 47.2 percent drink liquor. Tenth graders were somewhat less likely to drink. Fifty percent drink beer, 52.5 percent drink wine coolers, and 39 percent drink liquor. Eighth graders were less likely to drink. Thirty seven percent reported drinking beer, 36.4 percent drank wine coolers and 20 percent drank liquor.

Even sixth and seventh graders experienced drinking. Twenty six percent of the sixth graders and 25 percent of seventh graders drink beer. Twenty nine percent of sixth graders and 30 percent of seventh graders drink wine coolers and 15.8 percent of sixth graders and 14.8 percent of seventh graders reported drinking liquor.

Most of this drinking takes place • on weekends. For example on the ’ question “When do you use beer?” 3.7 percent of the seniors checked before school, 3.7 percent also checked during school, 11.1 percent checked after school, 13 percent checked week night, and 61.1 percent checked weekend. Students could check more than one answer on this question. Thirty eight percent said they don’t use beer.
