eluded, among others, guitarist, Crary and bapjo player, Hickman, Berline continued collaborating with Crary and Hickman and in 1978 a Japanese promoter offered him a two week tour but only had three air fares.
Berline invited his two other partners and Berline, Crary and Hickman, a new format bluegrass trio was bom. The trio toured the concert and festival circuit through* out the ’70s and ’80s.
In 1988 Steve Spurgin joined the group bringing with him his catalog of original songs, warm, polished vocals and driving bass. Their first recording together, Now They Are Four, met with great critical acclaim.
In 1990 they stepped into the traditional five piece format and added John Moore playing guitar and mandolin as well as another strong vocal. As the band members were added, it became apparent that a new masthead was necessary, and California took flight. With all but Steve now living in Southern California, the moniker seemed appropriate.
Throughout their metamorphoses, these musicians have been true representatives of America’s bluegrass and traditional music. The band has been influential in introducing this genre at festivals and concerts in the South Pacific and in North Africa for the USIS.
