2. Poison ivy. Called “the scourge of the great outdoors”, poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac affects 10 to 60 million Americans each year. It is the single most common cause of allergic reactions in this country.

A sticky substance found in the leaves and stem of these plants sticks to clothing, gardening tools, sports equipment and even family pets, causing an allergic rash to those who then come in contact with the object. The best treatment, if exposed, is to immediately wash all equipment (and yourself) with running water which neutralizes the sticky sap and prevents it from spreading. Avoidance is the best cure but if you come down with the rash, which sometimes resembles insect bites, simple over-the-counter preparations will offer some relief. The rash should clear up in about 1620 days.

3. Hives. Hot weather, exercise, stress and certain foods are the most common causes of hives. Raised bumps and large patches of red skin around them, followed by itching, are common symptoms of hives.
